It would be a shame if you were fined during your stay in Brazil. Check out our tips on how to enjoy the F1 race in São Paulo without spending extra.
Here's an overview of traffic rules and regulations in Brazil:
Similar to the United States and Canada, vehicles in Brazil drive on the right side of the road.
Speed limits fluctuate based on the road type and area. Generally, within urban zones, speeds typically hover around 60 km/h (approximately 37 mph), while on highways, they span from 80 km/h (roughly 50 mph) to 110 km/h (about 68 mph).
Motorists are required to observe traffic signals and signage, which encompass stop signs, yield signs, and various regulatory indicators.
Since 2008, Brazil has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards alcohol consumption while driving. If a driver is caught with any amount of alcohol in their system (up to 0.06% BAC), they face a 12-month licence suspension, a fine of BRL 2,934.70 (approx. 555 USD), and their vehicle may be seized. Anything above 0.06% BAC is deemed a criminal offence.
All passengers in a vehicle must wear seatbelts, regardless of where they are seated.
The use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited unless using a hands-free system.
When driving in Brazil, it is very important to familiarise yourself with the local traffic regulations so that you can comply with them. Be vigilant and defensive as the traffic situation can be chaotic, especially in urban areas.
Plan your routes to avoid rush hour traffic if possible, and rely on GPS navigation to navigate unfamiliar roads. Watch out for speed bumps, intersections and motorcyclists, and always keep valuables out of sight to reduce the risk of theft. Last but not least, remain patient and calm, as aggressive driver behaviour can escalate the situation and increase the likelihood of an accident.
Please note that São Paulo is known for its bad traffic situation. Keep in mind that due to the high number of crimes committed at traffic lights, in large cities it is tolerated that drivers do not stop at red lights at night.
